  • Larry Schultz: the Rocket Yoga founder

    Larry Schultz, also known as “the father of Rocket Yoga,” was a dedicated student of Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. Schultz began his yoga practice in the 1970s and quickly fell in love with the Ashtanga method. He went on to become one of Jois’ most dedicated and accomplished students.

    In the 1980s, Schultz began to experiment with the Ashtanga series, adding new poses and modifications to the practice. He also began to incorporate elements of vinyasa flow, a style of yoga that emphasizes movement & breath, but being more creative. The result was to become the Rocket style, a dynamic and invigorating yoga practice that quickly gained popularity among yoga students.

    What is Rocket Yoga? Origin of Rocket Yoga

    In the mid 1990s, Larry Schultz traveled on tour with the Grateful Dead as the band’s personal yoga teacher. He spent a lot of time in hotels and had to find ways to entertain himself. Bored in his hotel room, practicing on his own, he came up with a highly creative, highly accessible version of Ashtanga Vinyasa, later named Rocket Yoga.

    Why the name “Rocket Yoga”?

    The “Rocket” name comes from Bob Wier, the famous guitar player from the iconic rock band “The Grateful Dead”. After one of the classes, Bob asked Larry Shultz: “How do you call this yoga sequence? It’s great!”. Larry replied that he did not have a name for it; he just loved to teach it. Bob Wier then said to Larry that he should call it “The Rocket!” Larry asked why, and Wier replied, “because it gets you there faster!!” And it stuck instantly. Larry joked he never knew where “there” was… but the Rocket would take you there faster anyway.

While we keep the Ujjaji Pranayama breathing and five breaths per pose, the count is a bit faster. It makes the practice more fun while keeping the meditative aspect of the breath. Rocket becomes like a dance or a moving meditation.

Generally, the playlist will be more upbeat and energetic than a regular yoga class, mixing different genres such as rock, hip-hop, electronic, and world music. The music keeps the energy high and supports students to maintain a steady pace throughout the practice.

      In my experience of the empowering flow of Rocket Yoga, I find myself transcending limitations, embracing vulnerability, and harnessing inner strength. As I synchronize my breath with each challenging movement, I am reminded that the journey is as much about the exploration within as it is about the physical asanas. This style of yoga gifts me a renewed sense of freedom and possibility. It’s the perfect complement of my Yin practice.

    The Rocket Yoga Sequences

    Warm-up sequence

    Same as the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga method, the Rocket practice begins with the Sun Salutations sequences, to help prepare the body for the more intense poses that are to come. Usually, we will do 3 rounds of Sun Salutation A followed by 3 rounds of Sun Salutation B. It’s recommended to simply walk back for the Sun Salutaion A rounds and start to jump back from Sun Salutation B.

    Right after the last Sun Salutation B, student will get the first taste of Rocket with the launching sequence. This little vinyasa flow sets the pace and vibe for the rest of the rocket practice. It starts with Chair pose, followed by Half chair pose and from there the first arm balance: Bakasana or Crow pose. From there, we jump back to chaturanga for a vinyasa and then initiate the standing sequence of the Rocket sequence. Check out the video in the next section for a demonstration of the launching sequence.

    The practice then moves on to a launching sequence linked to a series of standing poses, such as the Warrior poses and the Triangle poses. These helps to build strength and balance in the legs and core.

    Rocket 1 is based on the Ashtanga Primary Series. A big focus is on forward folds, which lengthen and strengthen the hamstrings.

    Rocket 2 is based on the Intermediate Series with a focus on spinal extensions to stimulate the nervous system. Larry Schultz like to joke about Rocket yoga 2 sequence by saying: “90 min classes, 90 poses! That’s the Rocket!”

    Rocket Yoga 3 Sequence

    Rocket 3 is a combination of Rocket 1 and 2. Rocket 3 doesn’t imply that it is more advanced, it simply contains asanas from Rocket 1 and 2, and as per the Rocket philosophy, it should always remain accessible.

    Unlike the strict sequence of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga where each pose is practiced following a rigid order, Rocket Yoga is more fluid and playful.     If you spend any time on Instagram these days, it might seem like every yoga teacher out there is teaching, traveling and making it happen abroad. As a yoga instructor, I received my 200 hour yoga certification to teach in the past year and during this time I have also been traveling around the world; finding places to teach at as I go.

    To date I have secured teaching jobs in Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia. It’s been a fantastic journey of personal growth, as a traveling yoga teacher and as a human being. The good news is that I am not unique in this venture as I have met countless other yoga teachers doing the same thing and they are thriving. Do not fear, there are several ways to get your foot in the door and to get yourself out into the big wide world and teach yoga abroad.

    In this article, I will share with you my best tips and experiences about becoming a yoga teacher in paradise locations. My goal is to help you start your journey as a new traveling yoga teacher and teach yoga classes around the world!

    1. Create a great Yoga resume

    Before you pack your yoga mat and head off into the sunset, put together a resume to help you get hired as soon as possible. This may lead to you securing yourself a job abroad even before you’ve hopped onto a plane.

    Your resume will need to stand out and look professional at the same time, so remember to sell yourself and be true to who you are as a teacher. Add in any extra details of further qualifications and any past job experience that you have i.e massage, nutrition, mindfulness, etc. This will help show potential employers how much you can bring to their business. Also, include a clear picture of yourself and where to find your yoga-related social media platforms that you may have. If you, for example, attended the Thailand or Bali Yoga Teacher Training with All Yoga, you can even ask them for a reference.

    2. Look out for teaching positions online

    With websites such as Yoga Trade, Yoga Travel Jobs, or Yoga teacher jobs on Jooble, there are many ways to start looking for a position even before you’ve left your homeland. There are several private Facebook groups that you can join to find out what jobs are being offered, what the role entails, and where the job is.

    If you have already booked a flight or you have a particular destination in mind, start searching online for yoga studios in the area and send them your resume. Social media is a great way to find out what positions are available too. I ended up teaching at a yoga studio for several months in Malaysia that advertised for a yoga teacher on their Facebook page.

    As you put together your experiences and seek out new teaching positions online, consider utilizing tools alongside your resume to enhance your communication. An easy text summarizer can help condense your qualifications and achievements into impactful bites that potential employers swiftly consume, without diluting the essence of who you are as a teacher.

    3. Apply to teach in holiday resorts/retreat centers

    After creating your resume, send it off to hotels and resorts that advertise an interest in wellness to potential visitors. Spend some time researching resorts or hotels that have on-site gyms, fitness centers or yoga classes and get in contact with them either by phone or via email.

    After emailing a few resorts, I ended up teaching on a 5* private island, as well as being offered a position at a wellness retreat centre. Often these high-end establishments will offer a higher paid salary, accommodation and food to teachers. Some resorts also may be looking for permanent in-house yoga teachers or they will have guest spots that need to be filled for several weeks or months by teachers passing through the area.

    For those interested in combining their passion for yoga with extraordinary travel experiences, consider destinations that offer a unique perspective of nature and wildlife. Opportunities abound to teach at stunning retreat centers near pristine natural habitats.

    Then, when you seek unparalleled encounters beyond your standard retreats, make sure to save some time in your itinerary to explore Tanzania wildlife. The breathtaking landscapes and luxurious safaris provide an exquisite way to balance yoga teaching adventures with memorable journeys into untamed wilderness.

    4. Volunteer

    Sign up to sites such as Workaway to find volunteer positions around the world. Various unique projects offer volunteer roles that will offer things in exchange for your time teaching, and this usually includes accommodation. Assist with projects with any other skills you have to help their businesses, like writing blog posts for their website, cooking meals for their staff or by creating a logo for them. Another bonus with using your time to volunteer is that it will help keep costs down whilst still giving you valuable hours of teaching experience.

    5. Teach at guesthouses/hostels

    Offer your services as a teacher at local guesthouses/hostels in exchange for accommodation or for food which will help you save out with your budget. Usually smaller guesthouses will not be able to offer payment but they’ll be happy to discuss other ways to create an exchange for your classes. Or connect with other travelers at your hostel and offer to do an exchange with them directly, maybe they can teach you a new skill, take photographs for you or offer a healing session. The options and opportunities are endless!

    Socialise with other traveling teachers wherever you are for tips on places to teach at and for potential job openings. Many teachers will be coming and going on their travels so you may find a spot to fill, or maybe you can team up and assist them with a retreat or a Bali YTT. I’ve met so many wonderful yoga teachers on my travels and I’ve been given lots of fantastic recommendations too.

    7. Run classes at cafes/ health food stores

    In Northern Thailand and across Southeast Asia, there are many health conscious cafes that double up as a yoga studio or they have a space suitable to hold classes at. Scout out some local places to teach at and contact the owners to see what can be arranged. You can even create deals for a free tea or juice after each session, or a class pass discount. Or if you will be in one place for several weeks, see if you can arrange one or several yoga workshops.

    8. Believe it is possible

    This tip may be the most important – and that is to believe that it is possible to teach abroad. Once you have packed everything that you need, the greatest thing to take with you is your belief in yourself. Bounding out into the big wide world can feel incredibly scary, but don’t let a little seed of fear sprout into something bigger. Trust in yourself and step into your power because your adventure awaits.
